Scientific tourist" magazine

Editorial

" Le Touriste Scientifique " is a magazine produced by the Master's program in Sports Tourism Management at Montpellier's UFR-STAPS. The Sports Tourism Management program trains future specialists in sports management, tourism and leisure (over 800 professionals since 1992).

Our course is distinguished by its dual component of tourism and sport, giving it a unique multidisciplinary approach. The students, who come from a wide range of backgrounds, bring real added value to this master's degree thanks to their varied skills. The aim of this course is to reinforce the fundamentals of management, develop in-depth knowledge of the players and issues involved in sports tourism, and deepen the skills specific to this field. Beyond the professional aspect, the research-oriented teaching enables students to develop a critical mind and become specialists on a specific issue.

As students in this program, we are committed to responding to the new tourism and sports challenges facing our society. Changes in behavior and lifestyles, as well as the emergence of new needs, challenge us to bring a new vision, to innovate and to give meaning to this demand.

Our magazine focuses on contemporary sports tourism. We publish scientific articles written by Master's students, covering various disciplines related to sports tourism. Our aim is to promote the work of our students to professionals in the sector, creating a lasting link between the university and the business world. Here you'll find research articles based on the dissertations of first-year Master's students.

All these publications are submitted to the expertise of social science researchers at Montpellier's UFR-STAPS ( SantESiH team, UR_UM211).

campus 2023" special issue

Introduction

Readers,

This year, we are privileged to present a special edition of our magazine "Le Touriste Scientifique".

This magazine, produced as a result of research carried out by 2nd year students in the Sports Tourism Management master's program at Montpellier's UFR STAPS, has a special edition this year, following the CAMPUS 2023 program, which is being followed by part of the 2022/2023 graduating class.

CAMPUS 2023, created to coincide with the Rugby World Cup, is an "off-site" apprentice training center (CFA) which, in association with a number of educational partners throughout France, aims to train nearly 3,000 young people in apprenticeships in sports-related professions, alongside free diploma courses, in partnership with the Ministry of Employment and the French Rugby Federation.

Our first special edition features 5 articles on the impact of sport on our society.

These scientific articles, linked by the impact of sport on the evolution of today's society, are a source of reflection and inspiration for other disciplines not covered in these articles. They offer us a new vision of sport, of the impact it can have on different scales, and of its general interest. We hope that these articles will serve as a source of inspiration, and that this edition will help to demonstrate the importance of involvement in sport for young and old alike.

We hope you enjoy your reading.

ZWIFT's impact on cycling

By Séverine Mignot

Studying for a Master's 2 in Sports Tourism Management at the STAPS in Montpellier, I'm doing a work-study placement at the Comité Régional ASPTT Occitanie in communications and event organization. I chose this subject because, having been a cycling enthusiast for a few years, I wondered about the place the Zwift app had taken among cyclists after the Covid 19 pandemic.

Popularizing ultra-trail:
promoting and enhancing local communities

By Salomé Launay

Following a Bachelor's degree in Sport Management at ESSCA Bordeaux from 2018 to 2021, I joined the Master 1 Management du Tourisme Sportif at the UFR-STAPS in Montpellier.

The link between tourism and sport has fascinated me for some years now, and my passion for outdoor sports led me to investigate the world of trail running. After graduating from university, my project is to work towards the development and awareness of outdoor activities.

Pedestrian itinerancy: an experience built to cope with our fast-paced society.

By Louise Gahery

I'm passionate about outdoor activities, from running and canoeing to hiking. For almost two years now, I've been traveling around France, discovering incredible landscapes while taking my time. That's how I came up with the idea of studying the very meaning of this practice, and how does this trip differ from others?

Esport: A development opportunity in the tourism sector through sports entertainment

By Andréa Cavallo

After completing my first two years of STAPS at the Université Savoie Mont-Blanc campus in Chambéry, I decided to pursue my studies with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Management at the UFR STAPS in Montpellier, leading to a Master's degree in Sports Tourism Management.

In parallel with this pursuit of higher education in an unfamiliar region, I had an unbridled passion for the world of esports and streaming. With a particular interest in this ecosystem, I became interested in how it worked and in the organization of the various events created in the wake of the media explosion caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

With a degree in STAPS APA-S (adapted physical activities), I went on to study for a Master's degree in Sports Tourism Management at the UFR-STAPS of the University of Montpellier, in order to combine tourism, sport and disability, with the aim of creating my own structure offering sports holidays adapted to people with specific needs (disabled, elderly, chronically ill, etc.).

Following a degree in sports management at ILEPS, I seized the opportunity offered by France 2023 to join the Master in Sports Tourism Management at the University of Montpellier, on a sandwich course with a great club: Palavas Kayak de Mer.

The discovery of paddle sports and contact with the club's team led me to start a sociological research project on kayaking.

Between autonomy and dependence, the practice of handiskiing as a path towards destigmatization

By Léna Egio

Captivated by the world of disability and that of outdoor sports, I wanted to interweave these two fields as part of my end-of-studies work. To do so, I chose to examine the practice of handiskiing. Indeed, after training to become a volunteer pilot, I wanted to understand more about it. This research enabled me to see the sport from a different angle than that of a mere spectator.

Accessibility of mid-mountain sports sites and areas: difficulties in promoting the Tourisme & Handicap brand; study of the Hautes-Pyrénées region.

by Anna SIEGEL

" Passionate about sport and its environment, I started working in tourist resorts as soon as I was old enough. A degree in Sports Management from the University of Nantes enabled me to develop my knowledge of sport and its challenges. Access to sport for all is an issue that has always challenged me and to which I wanted to find answers. Like the expression: "make a contribution", this article is my contribution to making sports tourism accessible to all.

The concept of "naturalness" in the practice of indoor climbers

by Clément MONTANE

"After completing a BTS in Nature Management and Protection, I decided to combine my passion for sport with my studies by enrolling in a Licence Professionnelle in Nature Sports Management in Millau. The Master's degree in Sports Tourism Management at Montpellier University's UFR STAPS was the next logical step.

As an avid climber, I've seen a lot of changes in the places where I practice, both indoors and outdoors. In talking with other climbers, I've been struck by the great diversity of the sport. The sport has been evolving steadily since the 70s, while the role of naturalness is becoming increasingly blurred".

Adaptation strategies and modes of governance in mid-mountain resorts in the face of global warming: The example of the Jura mountains through the resorts of Les Rousses and Métabief Mont d'Or.

by Matteo BUIN

"After obtaining a Licence 3 in sports management in Besançon, I enrolled in the Master's program in Sports Tourism Management in Montpellier. Passionate about outdoor sports and attracted by tourism, I want to combine these two fields in my future professional life".

Using the 24 Hours of Le Mans sporting event as a tool for public action.

by Richard LELONG

"Passionate about sport, tourism and the notion of heritage, my ambition is to join the world of local authorities in order to develop projects around these 3 areas. For this end-of-study article, I wanted to focus on my department's flagship event, the 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race. This soon-to-be century-old event, a historic heritage event and a veritable technological laboratory, deserves to be examined as a tool for governance".

The militant commitment of organizers of solidarity and charity sporting events: From moral shock to identity-building

by Yuna BEAUMONT

"After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in STAPS (Sports Training) from the Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest, I decided to pursue my studies with a Master's degree in Sports Tourism Management at the UFR-STAPS in Montpellier, in order to move into this new, highly diversified sector.

Thanks to my many years of practice in the field of sports training, I've become aware of the importance of transmitting values. That's why I'm particularly interested in all those people who fight to defend their values through sport and charitable events.
